Long Distance Move
Thanks for everything!
The manager at Northstar came to my house for the estimation. He was on time and the estimate given was on the higher side. We set a date and time for the move. Two days prior to the moving date I had to reschedule and move the date ahead by a day. The people at Northstar were very accommodating and they obliged. On the day of the move the movers arrived on time. The movers handled all our furniture and boxes very professionally. The worked with care and in a timely manner. None of the items were damaged in the process. The day after this I received a call from Northstar with the final moving charge and this amount was about 300$ less than the estimate.
Once I reached Austin and a place, about 10 days after moving, I informed Northstar with the destination address. I was told the items would arrive in 5-7 days. However, they arrived in 4 days. A day prior to the arrival I was informed of the time of arrival. The items arrived on time. The moving assembled the furniture as required and it did not take them long. None of the items were damaged except for one my mountain bikes had a bent spoke, but I wouldn’t care too much about it.
Overall I am very happy with the way the move was handled and would highly recommend using them.
It was a substantial move and I approached it with more than a little anxiety. I did research on moving companies and found that the reported problems were frightening (damage, shipments held hostage, etc.). I put the move out to bid and found NorthStar was not the lowest but was very competitive and had by far the best reviews and recommendations, and as I worked with them, I saw that they earned their excellent reviews, from start to finish. Here’s our experience:
Estimated Cost: They gave me an estimate, based on the inventory I provided them, with easy to understand calculation of their pricing. Everything is based on weight, not the number of boxes or the amount of time it takes to load or unload, which was different from the local moves I’d done in the past. This meant that the cost was very reasonable, even for a 3,000 mile move. Samantha was our rep and she was very helpful in explaining everything, so no surprises.
Pick-Up: Erik, Melvin and two others (apologies for not getting the names) did an amazing job of wrapping furniture and loading everything and were extremely friendly and helpful. I was a careful packer but had them pack a lamp in their special boxes and was glad I did. I also purchased a dozen blankets in advance, which saved some money and they used all of them plus a few of theirs. The cost for their packing materials was less than I could get on my own. They did a careful inventory and then gave me an updated estimate.
Actual Cost: After the shipment was picked up, it was weighed, item by item, to get an actual cost. We ended up shipping significantly more than originally anticipated (not uncommon) our revised bid reflected that. Our final cost was actually less than the revised bid. Happy surprise.
Move Updates: We signed a contract based on an actual pick-up date and a window for delivery. I was nervous not knowing the actual delivery date, but Illyas, our dispatcher, provided ongoing updates and we were able to plan accordingly. We got preliminary schedule after the shipment was weighed, along the route, 24 hours in advance and 1 hour in advance. We were so grateful they got everything there within the delivery window, before my daughter started classes.
Delivery: The two people who delivered could not have been nicer. They placed furniture, assembling the bedroom set, attaching the mirror to the dresser, etc., and placed the TV and printer where they needed to go, which would have been hard for my daughter to do on her own. All boxes marked fragile were in perfect shape. Boxes not marked fragile were treated a little more roughly, but everything arrived in good shape and all boxes were intact.
Follow-Up: Both the day of delivery and after having a chance to unpack, NorthStar called to make sure everything was fine. We found a damaged lamp shade and they were great about compensating us for that (Ram was especially helpful). They have a form they emailed us and it was easy. Given the move (2,500 pounds over 3,000 miles), I was delighted that this was the only problem and they resolved it beautifully.
I wholeheartedly recommend NorthStar. It’s scary to move long distance and they made it as easy as possible.
I recommend that you check out the California PUC and Better Business Bureau for reports on movers. Here are those URL’s:

I moved from San Francisco to Chicago a few weeks ago and was very nervous about my stuff arriving late and paying too much. Wendy at Northstar helped put together my quote and eased my nerves. It also helped that the company has such great reviews on Yelp. I had only a 4-day window for delivery when I would be in Chicago to intercept the movers and Northstar made it happen. I packed most stuff myself, but they wrapped the furniture and did a great job. The movers were extremely professional and fast. They arrived late at pick-up, but that’s okay because they gave me a discount.
As the delivery got closer, I was told unexpectedly that I would incur a hefty find from my new condo building if the movers arrived on the weekend. So, I called Northstar in a panic and again they made it happen. The delivery was right on time, when I requested, extremely quick and very professional again.
I’m very impressed with this company and highly recommend them to others!
We recently moved from Southern California to Northern Oregon, and used Northstar moving after doing tons of research. We’ve never used a professional mover before, and after hearing all the horror stories from everyone and their mother, we decided to give Northstar a chance based on their staggering number of positive reviews.
I won’t go too far into specifics, but needless to say, I’m so happy we decided to go with Northstar. The experience was just fantastic. There was no drama, so surprises, and the professionalism was second to none.
Wendy at the main office was so helpful and completely willing to answer any and all of my myriad of questions. Angel and his team in LA were fast, efficient, and curteous. And Walt and his guy up in Oregon made the drive in three days, and unloaded everything within two hours. They even negotiated some rather sharp turns with the 18-wheeler in our new parking lot with total ease.
And aside from some minor bumps and bruises, our stuff arrived intact, and nothing was lost. Only two small things broke, but they are unimportant, and totally my fault based on how I packed them. So no harm done.
So thanks Northstar, you really made an incredibly stressful situation so much easier to handle. When you don’t have to worry about your stuff getting lost or broken, being held hostage, or if/when it’ll show up, you can really focus on the important things during a move. I’m recommending Northstar to everyone that I know back in LA, and if you’re reading this review, I hope you’ll give them a chance.
