NorthStar Moving Company’s Laura McHolm met Claire in 2011 when Claire was just 13 years old. McHolm was answering Claire’s heartfelt wish to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. She was immediately moved by Claire’s magical, powerful outlook and insightful positive message. Since that first encounter, McHolm has been inspired to shine a spotlight on Claire and to help build the Claire’s Place Foundation […]
Over the past decade, McHolm and her marketing team at NorthStar Moving have donated thousand of hours and their expertise to Claire’s Place.

The Los Angeles Business Journal published its annual list of Fastest Growing Private Companies headquartered in LA County in their December 12, 2022 issue. Companies are ranked by their percentage growth from 2019 to 2021. NorthStar Moving is honored to have been included in the 50th place.
One of the things the NorthStar team discovered about moving is that more stuff gets thrown out on moving day than any other day of the year. Rather than scrambling to find a solution for outgrown clothes and furniture, NorthStar makes the donation process simple. When cleaning out a pantry, for example, there’s no need to throw that food away. NorthStar moves the food to hungry families’ tables. NorthStar clients also turn their hand me downs into hand me ups.
Over the past decade, NorthStar Moving has partnered with different organizations to collect food donations for local food banks. Each year NorthStar Moving raises donations, picks up and delivers all the collected food items.
In an award ceremony, the Los Angeles Business Journal celebrated their annual 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies in Los Angeles list, and honored a specific group of Industry Disruptors selected by the editors from those ranked companies. The editors chose NorthStar Moving as the winner of their 2022 Disruptor Award for Social Responsibility for their steadfast commitment to corporate citizenship, changing the moving industry through charitable contributions and green practices.
The Los Angeles Business Journal published their annual list of Top Women-Owned Businesses in Los Angeles County on August 8, 2022. Once again, we are honored to make this prestigious list. This year, NorthStar Moving’s Director of Marketing and Co-Founder Laura McHolm was one of seven leading women business owners to be profiled in the special report.
Moving a household is among the most stressful events a family can endure.
“Everything is uprooted,” said Laura McHolm, the co-founder of NorthStar Moving Co. of Northridge. Moves typically are made amid “the chaotic backdrop of not being able to find your favorite pair of socks or the kids’ night light because everything is in boxes.”
What’s more, a move often is the result of some big life change: marriage, divorce, new baby, new job. And it typically involves the apprehension of new schools for the kids and finding new friends for the whole family.
“Let’s face it, it’s stressful and nobody enjoys it,” said McHolm. “It’s truly the time we could all use a little TLC. But the moving industry was a service industry that sorely lacked service.”
So, she set out to change that with her company by emphasizing service. And she believes she had an advantage.
“Being a woman has absolutely helped me have a fresh perspective in a traditionally male-dominated industry,” McHolm said. She had the freedom to think outside the proverbial box.
“Most people think of moving as burly guys carrying sofas and heavy boxes,” she said. “However, anyone who has moved knows it is much more than moving all the furniture. Even though the industry is male dominated, women, usually, select the moving company and orchestrate the move itself.”
So her goal was to turn moving into a true service business.
