Summer should mean vacation, bbqs and pool parties, but for many families, summer means the stress of trying to feed their kids. Sadly, for some children the only meal they receive is at school. In California, 2 million children live in low-income households affected by hunger. According to a new study released by USC Dornsife’s Public Exchange, L.A. County has some of the highest rates of food insecurity. The study found that more than 800,000 Los Angeles County households experienced food insecurity over the 12 months ending July 2022. These statistics show an increase from the previous 17% in 2021 to 24% in 2022. Although we’ve made it past the pandemic, food insecurity is still a growing challenge in our community.
Here are some important statistics to keep in mind:
-
1 in 4 children in Los Angeles County does not know from where their next meal is coming
- $1 donated provides up to 4 meals
- Every $25 provides up to 100 nutritious meals.
- Just $23 per month provides a year’s worth of food to a neighbor in need.
When school is out for the summer, families are forced to turn to a food bank for assistance. However, due to rising inflation, food banks are paying more for food, transportation and distribution. To meet the ongoing hunger, food banks need our donations.
What you can do to help:
Last year our 10th annual “Let’s Send Hunger Packing” food drive in collaboration with Compass Real Estate raised $44,630 for the LA Food Bank, providing 178,520 meals to feed hungry children in Los Angeles County. This year our 11th annual “Let’s Send Hunger Packing!” Virtual Food Drive is from June 26th, 2023 to July 31st, 2023. We have teamed up with Compass Real Estate, but we need YOU. All donations will go directly to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. For the price of a cup of coffee, you can provide 12 meals for hungry kids! Together, we can send hunger packing. Make your donation by July 31, 2023.
