People Who Move Us: Teo Alfero – The Founder Of Wolf Connection

On the fringes of Los Angeles, our backyards are teeming with wildlife. From rattlesnakes to mountain lions, many people experience a few run ins with nature. However, as Angelenos we spend most of our time in a concrete jungle, exposing us to different kinds of beasts that affect our well being. As a result, many youths are at-risk, suffering physical and emotional attacks every day. Teo Alfero, founded Wolf Connection, a  501 c(3) nonprofit initiative that brings together the wilds of nature and the wilds of the human experience to create an educational and empowerment program with wolf dogs. The wolf dogs are trained as Youth Ambassadors to provide Wolf Therapy. Boys, girls, men and women work through the challenges of life by learning about nature, conservation and caring for another living being. The natural balance and intuition of wolves inspire and educate the at-risk youth. By working with rescued wolf dogs who have also suffered abuse and neglect, youths are able to identify with these animals. As a result, both are given an opportunity to heal and move past traumatic experiences through an organic approach. By finding this bond with nature, Teo Alfero and Wolf Connection have found a unique way to reduce violence and improve healthy living in our community.

Wolf Connection was created in 2009  by Teo Alfero who is originally from Argentina. Coming from a family that supported youth development, Teo began mentoring young people through rock climbing experiences. As a mentor and a life coach for adolescents and young adults, Teo has specialized in guiding constructive dialogue and helps the participants discover ways to deal with life’s challenges. By centering Wolf Therapy around rescued wolf dogs, this allows Teo and his team to center the discussion around the animal’s past experience rather than the kid’s. The wolfpack now consists of 25 domestically raised and rescued animals that work with at-risk youth; children in foster care; gang members; military veterans with PTSD; and persons undergoing alcohol and drug rehabilitation.

Wolf therapy has produced many positive results and continues to grow. From presentations at schools and youth organizations, guided visits of the Wolf Connection Ranch, to Multi-day programs for schools and youth organizations, Wolf Connection tailors it’s curriculum to meet the needs of young people. The result is emotionally healthy young adults who are able to face new challenges.  Thanks to the connections and balance achieved through Wolf Therapy, the young adults have moved past the obstacles that hindered them. A teenage participant stated at her graduation from the program: “Wolf Connection has given me hope, and the tools and desire to try and make my life better despite my past. If the wolfdogs are able to move forward so am I. I feel happy with who I am now.” Teo Alfero and Wolf connection are making a positive difference in our community.
