Reading about the L.A. Marathon got me thinking about how awesome it would be to run a marathon. But, which one? Training for a marathon requires a lot of commitment. Since I love to find new and interesting ways to keep moving, I wanted a marathon that would challenge me but also be fun! It turns out, there’s more to this marathon stuff besides strapping on a sturdy pair of running shoes! I discovered a marathon of marathons that are weird, wacky and wonderful.
Each marathon on this list was included because it was fun, strange, amazing or a combination of all three!
10. Braaaaaaaains! Not the typical marathon battle cry, but for this zombie-themed marathon, it fits the bill!
9. Princess power! Disney actually has a marathon for every occasion and every person, including one that spans all four parks in Walt Disney World.
8. Lights out! This Firefly marathon takes place in the dark and requires runners to decorate themselves like, well, fireflies.
7. If you’ve never run in heels… well, it’s probably for the best. But if you want to try, this marathon requires runners strap on a pair and get moving!
6. Looking for Santa? Even if Mr. Kringle is a no-show, this snowy marathon provides plenty of thrills and chills–the weather-related kind, that is.
5. Philadelphia. That may not sound like a marathon, but that’s because Philadelphia hosts a wonderfully weird marathon constantly! (My favorite is the Color Me Rad!)
4. Man vs. Horse seems like a no brainer, but a man has actually won this marathon twice before! That was years ago. The battle for supremacy wages on!
3. This Great Wall marathon is, well, great! If you’ve ever wanted to see this wonder of the modern world up close, this is the marathon for you!
2. The London Marathon features a 26.2 mile course, and plenty of silly costumes. It’s probably the only marathon where you’ll see Darth Vader running next to Princess Diana and a caveman.
1. Muddy Buddy Marathon! This marathon is my favorite because it’s green! Plus, you have to do it with a buddy!
