The holiday season is all about giving. Most people don’t associate giving to the less fortunate with Thanksgiving. To me giving starts with being thankful for what you already have. Maybe that’s why they call it Thanksgiving. I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite charitable organizations. There were so many to choose from it was hard to narrow it down!
Charitable Organizations That We’re Thankful For
Kiva is a great non-profit organization that uses microfinance organizations to lend to people in impoverished countries around the world. Typically the focus is on countries that don’t have banking institutions. The great thing about this organization is that 100% of the loan is sent to Field Partners (microfinancers) and then they administer the loans in the field. Right now Kiva has a growing network of over 450 volunteers!
Another great organization is Toys For Tots. Started by the US Marine Corps, their mission has always been to provide toys for less fortunate children. Most people only associate TFT with the holiday season, but by participating in their “In Honor” campaign you can show your support during anytime of the year. This campaign allows you to send greeting cards to loved ones, friends, and colleagues. They have cards for all occasions and are now operating in all 50 states!
Karma Rescue is non-profit organization that helps find animals in need a permanent home. They also offer several educational programs and offer guidance/assistance with spaying and neutering animals. Along with the many other services they provide, they host adoptions twice each month and provide training for dog handling. You can also support them by donating to one of their ongoing programs such as: Paws For Life, 10,000 Paws or Sid’s Spay/Neuter Fund.
With Black Friday and holiday shopping being pushed to the forefront of our minds, sometimes we forget that not everyone has as much as we do. My Stuff Bags Foundation gives to children who don’t have permanent homes. It provides them with their very own My Stuff Bag. It is a blue duffel bag packed with school supplies, toiletries, clothes, toys, books, a stuffed animal and a blanket. With support from community organizations, grantors, and partners they have provided over 450,000 duffel bags to children in 49 states!
There are plenty more charitable organizations to donate to and participate in. Stay tuned for part 2 of my favorite charitable organizations!
