Want to make a difference for our environment? I know I do! We can each make a difference on a daily basis with smarter greener choices. Using recyclable packing supplies and a green moving company is a wonderful first step in a greener direction, but why stop there? Why not join forces with awesome green charities or green organizations that are already working hard to make a difference. In honor of Earth Day – April 22nd 2012, I found five fantastic  green charities that are making a huge impact and now you can too. In the words of Captain Planet, “The Power Is Yours,” we can all do our part to protect our beautiful home.

The Environmental Defense Fund is a green organization that passionately advocates stewardship of our environment, negotiating greener business practices. These modern day “planeteers”  tackle  most environmental threats to the climate, oceans, ecosystems and also people’s health. You can show your support for The Environmental Defense Fund by making a one time donation, becoming a member, or give a gift in honor of someone else. What a great way to celebrate Earth Day! Green giving is my favorite.

Another green charity to join is The Conservation Fund. This green charity is passionate about the conservation at home in the United States. Donations help protect places such as national parks, civil war battle fields and also recreation destinations that might one day become instinct. Their mission is to save and protect land and help create a sustainable community. Learn more about the Conservation Fund and make your donation.

A personal favorite green organization of mine is Kiva. Kiva is a non-profit organization that helps put your donation to work in a developing country. They make it possible for farmers, fisherman or small businesses have access to borrowing a small loan improve their own lives, change their situation. It’s kind of like teaching a man how to fish instead of giving him a fish, meaning your Kiva donation will make a lasting impact on a person’s life. The best part is it gets paid back to you so that you can put it right back into another great borrower. It’s the gift that keeps giving.

Another great green charity is the Eco Trust organization. They were the first to co-found the world’s first environmental bank, starting the world’s first ecosystem investment fund. Your donations are used to support many  of Eco Trusts projects such as creating new tools to keep communities informed and improve social, economic and environmental decision-making.
If you are looking to be the next Captain Planet, try Earthjustice, also known as the Earth’s lawyers. Earthjustice works through the courts on behalf of citizen groups, scientists, and other parties to make sure government agencies and private interests follow the law. Their main interest is strengthening environmental law and take on many cases both national and local. You can take action by submitting a petition to our very own President Obama from their website.

I could keep going, there are so many great teams out their making a difference. Make sure to join one today and show your love for our planet. Also follow us on twitter and my brother Zippy’s eco-friends.  What are some of your favorite green charities or non-profit organizations that are making a difference? I’d love to hear about them, please mention them in your comments so we can add them to our eco-friends.
